Akureyri is the second biggest town in Iceland after Reykjavik. Akureyri was settled by Eyvindarson the Nordic viking in the 9th century. During World War II the airport in Akureyri was one of three air bases in Iceland used by the Norwegian-British. The main income in Akureyri is the fishing industry, like most other small towns in Iceland.

Most Icelanders are familiar with the towns world class ice cream store called “Brynju Ís”, with its delicious locally made ice-cream. If you happen to be in Akureyri I would also recommend you to check out the history museum called “Mynjasafnið “ and the lovely outdoor swimming pool.
